About Dr. Eunice In Hwa Lee, DMA
Dr. Lee is a cellist, educator, and chamber musician with more than 26 years of teaching experience. She is the founder and director of Eunice Lee Cello Studio in McLean, Virginia, where she provides individualized instruction to students throughout Northern Virginia.
As an active performer, Dr. Lee has collaborated with internationally recognized musicians, including Colin Carr, Eric Bartlett, members of the Emerson and Tokyo String Quartets, and Sejong Soloists. She also contributed to Sejong Soloists’ album PASSION.
Dr. Lee was invited by the Korean government to perform at Korean embassies in the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, and Colombia as part of an international concert tour. Her performance experience includes appearances in Russia, Canada, Italy, Japan, Korea, and the United States. She has performed as a substitute cellist with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and with the KBS Symphony Orchestra, including a performance at Carnegie Hall in New York.
Dr. Lee has served as a judge for the New York International Competition and as a Teaching Artist and Cello Faculty member at the Mason Community Arts Academy of George Mason University. She is a member of the Music Teachers National Association, Virginia Music Teachers Association, Maryland State Music Teachers Association, Northern Virginia Music Teachers Association, Suzuki Association of the Americas, and Washington Music Teachers Association.
Her students have served as principal cellists with the American Youth Philharmonic Orchestras and in ensembles at the Governor’s School for the Performing Arts. They have also been selected for the All-National, All-Eastern, and Virginia All-State Orchestras.
Her students have received first prizes and other honors in competitions including the American Protégé International Competition, New York Artists International Competition, National Artists Competition, VMTA Concerto Competition, NVMTA Concerto Competition, AYPO Concerto Competition, and Charleston International Music Competition, as well as numerous regional and local auditions and competitions. They have also been selected for prestigious summer music programs, including the Boston University Tanglewood Institute and the National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute.
Dr. Lee’s own honors include First Prize in the cello division of the Moscow International Competition and First Prize at the Ackerman Chamber Music Competition. She received the Grand Prize at the Korean Cultural Center Competition and First Prize at the Seoul Youth Music Competition and Wolgahn Music Competition. She also received top prizes at the Ewha-Kyunghyang, JoongAng Ilbo, Chosun Ilbo, Segye Ilbo, and Hankook Ilbo Music Competitions.
She earned Second Prize at the New York Five Towns Young Artist Competition, was a finalist at the Aldo Parisot International Cello Competition, and was a semifinalist at the Dr. Luis Sigall International Cello Competition. She also received First Prize at the Alexander Buono International Competition and was selected for the Kumho Young Artist Audition, through which she presented a solo recital sponsored by the Kumho Cultural Foundation.
Dr. Lee earned her Doctor of Musical Arts in Cello Performance from Stony Brook University, where she studied with Colin Carr. She received her Master of Music and Artist Diploma from the Yale School of Music under Aldo Parisot and her Bachelor of Music from Korea National University of Arts under Myung-Wha Chung.
Her pedagogical training includes Suzuki Cello Units 1–10, Suzuki Early Childhood Education, and additional studies through the School for Strings in New York City and the Chicago Suzuki Institute. She also studied extensively with Eric Bartlett, cellist of the New York Philharmonic and cello faculty member at The Juilliard School.
